SEO for builders and tradespeople in Kerry: win more local jobs from Google
Word of mouth is great until it goes quiet. A practical guide to local SEO for builders, electricians, plumbers and painters in Kerry who want steady enquiries.
The short answer
Get a complete, verified Google Business Profile with your service area, give every main service its own page on a fast mobile website, show photos of real jobs, and ask every customer for a review. Do that consistently and you give Google every reason to show you when someone nearby searches.
Most builders and tradespeople in Kerry live on word of mouth. When it’s busy, it’s brilliant. When it goes quiet, you find out how many customers choose a tradesperson the other way: they search Google, look at the map results, check a website and the reviews, and contact whoever looks most trustworthy.
Even the neighbour who recommends you sends people to Google to check you out. If all they find is an old Facebook post and a map pin with no photos, some of them will contact someone else.
The good news: you don’t need to become a marketing expert. A handful of things, done properly and kept up, cover most of what matters for a trade business. Here they are, in order of importance.
How people find a tradesperson in Kerry now
Think about the searches: “builder Tralee”, “electrician near me”, “roofer Killarney”, “plumber Listowel”. For searches like these, Google usually shows a map with a few local businesses before the ordinary results, and those map results come from Google Business Profiles.
Google says local results are based mainly on three things (Google Business Profile Help):
- Relevance: how well your profile matches what someone searched for.
- Distance: how far you are from the person searching, or from the place they searched for.
- Prominence: how well known your business is, which includes your reviews and what’s said about you elsewhere online.
You can’t move your yard closer to every customer. You can make yourself the most relevant and the most prominent option, and that’s what the rest of this guide is about. Google also says there’s no way to pay for a better local ranking, so be wary of anyone selling one.
1. Get your Google Business Profile right
This is the single most important step for a trade business.
- Claim and verify it. An unverified profile does very little for you.
- Use your real business name, exactly as it appears on your van and your invoices. Adding keywords, such as “Best Builder Tralee”, breaks Google’s guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
- Pick the most specific category for your main trade, then only the few extra categories you genuinely need.
- Working from home? Hide your address and set a service area. Google’s guidelines say service-area businesses should hide an address they don’t serve customers at.
- Fill in everything: hours, services, a short description of what you do and where, and how to contact you.
- Add photos of real jobs, and keep adding them.
2. Give every main service its own page
If you do extensions, roofing and renovations, a single page that lists all three makes it hard for Google to match you to any of them. A page for each main service, explaining what you do, where, roughly how a job runs and how to get a quote, gives Google something specific to show for each search.
Don’t go to the other extreme, though. Twenty near-identical pages (“Builder Tralee”, “Builder Killarney”, “Builder Kenmare”) with only the town swapped are what Google calls doorway pages. Its spam policies name “pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page” as an example.
One page listing the areas you cover, plus real projects that mention where they were, is honest, and it works.
3. Show your work, not stock photos
People hiring a trade want proof. Before-and-after photos of real Kerry jobs do more than any slogan, and they help your profile and website look active. Caption them with the job and roughly where it was, for example “Kitchen extension near Castleisland”.
The website we built for Kelly’s Elite Painting in Tralee has a before-and-after gallery for exactly this reason.
4. Make it easy to get in touch from a phone
Most people looking for a tradesperson are on their phone, often in the middle of a problem: a leak, a tripped circuit, a quote they need this week. Every page should make the next step obvious:
- a call or message button that works with one tap
- a short quote form that asks only what you need to know
- your areas and hours where people can see them
The PS Electrical Services site we built has one-tap call and WhatsApp buttons for the same reason.
5. Ask every customer for a review, the right way
Reviews feed prominence, and they’re what people read before they contact you. Make asking part of finishing a job:
- Send your Google review link by text or WhatsApp the day you finish, while the job is fresh.
- Reply to every review, and answer the bad ones calmly and helpfully.
- Ask every customer, not only the happy ones.
Two things to avoid, because Google’s review policy prohibits both: offering discounts, or anything else, in return for a review, and asking only the customers you know will be positive.
6. A website that loads fast on a Kerry signal
Mobile coverage outside the towns can be patchy, and a customer standing in a field won’t wait for a slow page. Keep your site light: properly sized photos, no auto-playing video, no heavy sliders. Google also uses the mobile version of your site for ranking, so a site that struggles on a phone struggles on Google too. Our website development page explains how we keep sites fast.
7. Be consistent everywhere
Your business name, contact details and service area should match on your Google Business Profile, your website, Facebook and directories such as Golden Pages. Mismatched details make it harder for Google, and for customers, to be sure they’ve found the right business.
What not to waste money on
- Bought links, or “submission to hundreds of directories”. Google treats buying links for ranking as link spam.
- Guaranteed rankings. Google itself says nobody can guarantee a number one ranking. Read our red flags for hiring an SEO agency before you sign anything.
- Relying only on paid lead websites. They can fill gaps, but you’re renting customers. Your own profile, website and reviews keep working for you.
Where to start this week
- Claim or check your Google Business Profile, and fill in every field.
- Add ten photos of real jobs.
- Ask your last five customers for a review.
- Open your website on your phone, on mobile data, and try to request a quote.
- List your main services and check that each one has its own page.
